The Practical Imagination Chapter 1 – THE NARRATIVE IMPULSE

This package begins our study of Northrop Frye’s The Practical Imagination.  After examining the introductory material, we begin our study with a classic English Folk Tale.  After that, we progress through increasingly difficult stories.  Along the way, Professor Margarita highlights all sorts of vocabulary and grammatical devices which the second language student would normally find difficult to understand.  Also, the Professor invites the students to actively wrestle with the questions posed by Northrop Frye at the end of each story.  There are no “answers at the end of the book” to guide the class’s thinking, so each student is encouraged to use English to express his own opinion about the answers to the questions.    This is a great start to a serious study of literature for serious students of English.  Olavo de Carvalho personally selected this anthology as the best place for his Philosophy students to start in their attempt to learn language and Literature.
