Margarita Noyes has a Master’s Degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from Columbia International University, in Columbia South Carolina, earned in 1987. Since that time she has taught ESL both at home and abroad. She has also done teacher training at the Bachelor’s level and at the Master’s level, and her graduates are teaching English all around the world. Margarita currently teaches ESL for Chesterfield County Public Schools where she specializes in developing student’s pronunciation and listening skills. She also teaches Lessons Online, and receives English students into her home through the programs of the Full Immersion ESL Hostel and teaches Intensive English in her home in the summer.
Margarita lives in a beautiful home near Richmond, which is the capital of Virginia. Her family is close friends with the family of the Brazilian philosopher Olavo de Carvalho, and they cooperate on many things. If you visit one, you can visit the other. Margarita has a great gift of hospitality, and welcomes hundreds of people into her home every year. If you want to visit and stay in her hostel, prices can be found here.
An interesting thing about Margarita is that she has homeschooled her four children from kindergarten through High School. Three of the four Noyes children graduated from homeschool high-school early (between the ages of 15 and 17) and then went on to be honors students in college. Her eldest graduated Summa Cum Laude from the College of William and Mary, one of the toughest schools in the country, with no preparation other than homeschool. Professor Margarita is an interesting resource for parents who are getting started with home schooling their own children . She is working right now to prepare homeschool training materials in Portuguese.
A Welcome Letter from Margarita
Hi! I’m Margarita Noyes. In 1988 I got a Master’s Degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from Columbia International University. I hoped to be a career Christian missionary, and I wanted to be able to help people learn English where ever I went.
The missionary thing didn’t work out, but the Teaching thing turned out to be a great love and talent in my life.
I went on to teach English (and a lot of other things), and to train teachers. I also became a homeschooler and taught my 4 children from kindergarten to college.
In 2006 I met Olavo de Carvalho, a famous Brazilian philosopher who was living in secret exile in the United States, not far from my home. He had need of English lessons, and I worked with him a little bit … and our families became deep and lasting friends. In time, I began to teach English for Philosophy Students online to his students in Brazil– I didn’t know it at the time, but that was the beginning of Lessons OnLine.
Now I offer a number of online classes for students all over the world who have studied English in their countries, but would like to improve their speaking and listening. Students improve their English by studying books with me in the online courses , or they come to visit and practice their English in my Full Immersion ESL Hostel.
My online courses rely on the best modern research into what promotes language acquisition.
The classes provide an opportunity for a student to focus on an interesting text of literature in English. My spoken English is easy for Internationals to understand, and I explain the little things that most English speakers never explain. I also give English tips throughout the classes, so the student is actually learning English while studying the literary excerpt.
Most of my classes rely on the understanding that you need lots and lots of comprehensible listening in order to become fluent in spoken English, so my classes give you that.
So browse the website and enjoy. And don’t forget to let me know what you think!
